Yesss! That's how it should be eaten. I can't understand people buying the greenest banana at the supermarket. It is even better when you pick ripe from the plant.

Wow, thanks for sharing this. Everyone always told me ripe ones were better, but I never believed it. I'm going to try the experiment you suggest. I always avoid ripe bananas, but I guess I've been running away from the wrong food.

It really depends on what you believe about health and nutrition; a field where it's difficult to know what to believe because there's a lot of conflicting information out. Sugar-phobes praise the green banana because it's starchy and has less sugar. From what I understand the body is fueled on sugar, and the sugar found in fruit is the healthiest kind. So you'd want to eat the fruit at peak ripeness, before it starts to go bad.

Interesting...

you claim that bananas are sweeter when they are ripe. I'm not going to argue, I only call it a claim because I haven't tested it for myself (but I will now).

But is that the only reason to eat them when they're spotted?

Are they healthier for you ripe?

If they have the same health value, I think I'll keep eating them when they are yellow... because I really don't care if they're a little sweeter...

Either way, interesting post

Great blog post. :) People really need to learn about bananas, it seems. This summer, I was bringing some ripe bananas to school, and a couple of people asked me why I would bring such "ugly" bananas. They didn't believe me when I told them they're better this way.

I'll admit that I'm quite impatient and often eat them too early, but I try to let them ripen.

If you wait Too long they'll get mushy. Keep an eye on em and eat when they're juuust right!

For how long it depends on what they look like when you buy them. If they're green it will take about 5-6 days. If they're golden yellow they'll ripen in 2-3 days.
